Recipe for East Indian Dal. This classic East Indian recipe is usually served over rice.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup red lentils
  • 3-4 cups of water
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons turmeric
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 green chilis, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 medium tomatoes, diced
  • 1/4 cup chopped cilantro
  • 2 teaspoons whole yellow mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon whole cumin seed
  • 4 teaspoons vegetable oil, divided
  • salt to taste

Directions

  1. Cook lentils with the turmeric in about water until lentils are completely soft boiling water until lentils are soft, about 40 minutes. Drain. Meanwhile, sauté the onions, chilis, ginger, and garlic in 2 teaspoons oil until onions are soft, about 6 minutes. Add tomatoes. Continue cooking and stirring for about 7 or 8 minutes. Add the tomato mixture to lentils and mix to combine.
  2. Heat remaining 2 teaspoons of oil over low heat. Add mustard and cumin seeds and toast until fragrant. Stir into the lentil mixture. Serve hot over rice or as side dish.
