5 Hottest grill gadgets
In prehistoric times, grilling consisted of fire, food, and if the griller was lucky, maybe a spit or a grate. Fortunately, we've come a long way since then and now have a literal army of tools we can employ to make our grilling as great as possible. Still, not all grill gadgets are alike. Here are five of the hottest grill helpers of the season that you can use to produce exceptional food every time.
Himalayan salt block
OK, so this isn't exactly a gadget per se, but it is something you can get your favorite griller (or yourself!) if you want to take your grilled foods to the next level. These blocks are exactly what they sound like: slabs of Himalayan (pink) salt that you can rest foods on while they cook. Not only does the food take on a sort of smoky/saltiness from the block, Himalayan salt is also high in various flavor compounds, which also work to season the meat. The end result is that even the blandest foods get a boost in flavor you can't find anywhere else.
Motorized hot dog cooker
It's like a convenience store hot dog cooker at home! These motorized devices sit on top of your grill grates and roll the hot dogs in place to ensure even cooking, just like at your favorite gas station. However, the motorized hot dog cooker goes one step further because the meats also take on the smoky flavor of grilled foods. This is because they're being cooked over an actual flame instead of an electric coil.
Grill top popcorn popper
Smoked popcorn? Why not? You can actually buy cast iron or wire mesh grill top devices that allow you to pop popcorn directly over an open flame. You thought movie theater popcorn was good? You don't know what you're missing until you've tried a smoke-blessed bowl of popcorn made on a grill.
Jalapeno popper stand
These things come in all shapes and sizes, but at their most basic they're cast iron racks in which you can fit stuffed peppers, usually jalapenos. Toss the rack on the grill, close the lid, and come back in about 10 minutes for the best grilled poppers you're likely to find. Of course, you don't need a stand to make jalapeno poppers, but the fact the peppers stand upright means that the cheese doesn't spill out, the flavor stays in the pepper, and the grates remain clean. Plus, you can get them in the shape of your favorite sports teams, which is kind of cool.
Electric charcoal starter
Part of the reason people turn to gas grills is their convenience at the expense of that true grilled flavor. Enter electric charcoal starters which can, at the flick of a button that happens to be attached to a space-age-wand-looking device, ignite a fire over a pile of charcoal. It may not be grilling like our forefathers, but it sure does make things a lot easier for the griller who just wants to get in and get cooking.
