Round foods for March Madness

There are a lot of themes that go along with college basketball. March Madness, the big dance, Cinderella and her slipper, etc., but one idea that gets neglected is that fact players are putting a round ball into a hoop. That's what you're going to do with these circle-inspired foods.

Game day gourmet meatballs

Yields 24 balls

Ingredients:

  • 1 onion
  • 4 cloves garlic
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup Parmesan cheese
  • 2 pounds ground hamburger
  • Salt and pepper
  • 1 tablespoon celery salt
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 6 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 cans crushed tomatoes

Directions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Put the onion and garlic into a food processor until the onion has been pureed.
  3. Mix the onion, eggs, cheese, hamburger, 1 tablespoon of salt, 1 tablespoon of pepper, celery salt and nutmeg together in a bowl.
  4. Use an ice cream scoop to create 24 meatballs.
  5. Pour the olive oil into an oven-safe baking container and coat the bottom with it.
  6. Arrange the meatballs on the baking sheet so they are not touching and bake them for 4 minutes.
  7. Flip them and bake another 4 minutes.
  8. Pour the tomatoes around the meatballs and season with salt and pepper to taste.
  9. Cook the meatballs another 40 minutes, flipping every 10.

Sausage balls

Yields 24 balls

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound breakfast sausage
  • 1 pound hot Italian sausage
  • 2 bricks cream cheese
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese
  • 2 packages ranch dressing mix
  • 8 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cans light beer

Directions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Mix the sausage, cream cheese, cheddar cheese and ranch dressing mix together.
  3. Use an ice cream scoop again to make 24 sausage balls.
  4. Melt the butter over medium-high heat and then cook the sausage balls 4 minutes per side (you may need to do this in 2 to 4 batches).
  5. Put the sausage balls in a baking dish and pour the light beer into it.
  6. Bake the sausage balls for 30 minutes, flipping once.

Stuffed mushrooms

Yields 24 round mushrooms

Ingredients:

  • 24 mushroom caps
  • Cooking spray
  • 2 bricks cream cheese
  • 2 cups imitation crab
  • 1 cup Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoons garlic powder
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • Oil for frying

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Arrange the mushroom caps on a baking sheet and bake for 12 minutes.
  3. While the mushrooms are baking, mix the cream cheese, crab, Parmesan and garlic powder together.
  4. Also, while the mushroom caps are baking, mix the flour, egg, salt and milk.
  5. Beat the mixture with a fork to create a thick batter.
  6. While the caps are still hot, divide the cream cheese mix among the mushroom caps.
  7. Dip each mushroom cap into the batter and let it rest.
  8. Get the oil hot enough that a small ball of dough in the batter bubbles violently.
  9. Fry the mushrooms in small batches until golden brown.
